# Wrong Transaction Category

> What to do when a transaction is categorized incorrectly.

MyTruv automatically categorizes your transactions based on the merchant name and transaction data from your bank. When a category isn't right, you can fix it from the transaction itself on both web and iOS.

## How to fix a wrong category

<Note>
  **Web** ([app.mytruv.com/data/transactions](https://app.mytruv.com/data/transactions)): open the transaction's row menu and choose **Change category**. Pick the correct category, then choose the scope: this transaction only, or all transactions from the same merchant.

  **iOS**: open the transaction detail, tap the Category row, pick the correct category, then choose the scope.
</Note>

Choosing "all transactions from this merchant" is useful when a recurring merchant - like a grocery delivery service or gym - is always placed in the wrong category. The change applies to past and future transactions from that merchant.

If you already have a rule for a merchant and you set a different one, MyTruv asks whether to replace the existing rule before applying the new one.

## Undo a category change

If you want to go back to the bank's original categorization, web has a **Restore bank defaults** action in the transaction's row menu. You can revert just that one transaction, or remove the whole merchant rule to revert every transaction from that merchant.

<Tip>Restore bank defaults is currently available on the web; on iOS, set the category back manually for now.</Tip>

## How auto-categorization works

* Categories come from the merchant name and transaction data your bank returns
* Some merchants fall into unexpected categories (a grocery store's gas station might land in "Gas" instead of "Groceries")
* Stores that sell many types of products (Walmart, Amazon) often default to a general category
* Recently opened businesses may not be classified yet

When you set a per-merchant category, MyTruv keeps applying it to future transactions from that merchant automatically.
