# Why We Need Your Bank or Payroll Login

> How MyTruv connects to your bank or payroll, and what it can and can't do once connected.

To give you a complete picture of your finances, MyTruv needs to read your account data - balances, transactions, pay statements. The connection happens through a secure intermediary, so MyTruv itself never sees your login details.

## How the connection works

* **Truv handles the connection.** MyTruv connects to your bank and payroll accounts through Truv, our parent company and the financial-data aggregator that powers both surfaces.
* **Your credentials go to your institution, not to MyTruv.** When you enter your login on the connection screen, the credentials are sent through Truv's encrypted connection directly to your bank or payroll provider.
* **MyTruv never sees or stores your credentials.** They are handled entirely by Truv and the institution you're logging in to.

## What MyTruv can and can't do

* **Read-only access.** MyTruv can view your account information, transactions, and pay statements. It cannot move money, make payments, or take any action on your accounts.
* **No changes to your account.** Connecting MyTruv doesn't alter your bank or payroll settings, balances, or security in any way.

## Why a connection at all

Most banks and payroll providers don't expose public APIs for consumers to access their own data. Truv is the secure intermediary that makes the connection possible.

## What we use to connect: Truv

The bank connection isn't something MyTruv built in a weekend. It runs on [Truv](https://truv.com/commitment-to-security-and-privacy), our parent company and a financial-data platform that banks, lenders, and employers already rely on to verify applicants. It's not new or unproven - Truv has spent years moving financial data safely, is trusted by 8M+ consumers, and connects to [13,000+ banks and 100+ payroll providers](https://mytruv.com), including ADP, Gusto, and Rippling.

What that means for you:

* **Bank-level encryption.** Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest with the same standards banks use.
* **SOC 2 Type II certified.** Independent auditors verify Truv's security controls, not just Truv's own word for it.
* **Your login never reaches MyTruv.** Credentials go straight to your institution through Truv's encrypted connection.
* **Read-only, always.** The connection can see your accounts but can never move money or change anything.

Want to read it straight from the source? Truv publishes the details:

## Disconnecting

You can disconnect any linked account at any time, and the disconnection immediately revokes MyTruv's access to that account's data. See [how to remove a connection](/accounts/removing-an-account).
