MyTruv automatically categorizes your transactions, but sometimes the category may not be accurate. Here’s how auto-categorization works and what you can do about it.
How auto-categorization works
- MyTruv uses the merchant name and transaction data provided by your bank to assign categories
- Categories are determined automatically based on common merchant classifications
- Some merchants may fall into unexpected categories (e.g., a grocery store gas station might be categorized as “Gas” instead of “Groceries”)
Common reasons for miscategorization
- Vague merchant names - Some transactions have generic names that don’t clearly indicate the type of purchase
- Multi-purpose merchants - Stores that sell many types of products (like Walmart or Amazon) may default to a general category
- New merchants - Recently opened businesses may not yet be properly classified
What you can do
- Check the transaction details - Tap on any transaction to see the full merchant name and details
- Review your spending breakdown - Keep in mind that a few miscategorized transactions may slightly affect your spending insights
Tips
- Focus on trends, not individual transactions - Your overall spending patterns are still accurate even if a few individual transactions are miscategorized
- Use search and filters - You can search for specific merchants to find all related transactions regardless of category
Auto-categorization improves over time as more data becomes available about merchants and spending patterns.
